Description

Black Night Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius)
The Black Night is one of the most exclusive, striking, and sought-after morphs in the leopard gecko hobby. Originating from selective hyper-melanistic breeding in Europe, this high-end morph is famous for its distinct, velvety dark pigmentation—ranging from deep charcoal grey to pure, jet-black.
Physical Appearance & Expression
Unlike standard leopard geckos that showcase yellow bodies with dark spots, the Black Night morph strips away bright coloration in favor of deep melanistic tones:
Coloration: Varies from dark slate/charcoal pattern-less coats to solid, pitch-black "high-expression" individuals.
Distinct Features: Features black eyes, dark bellies, and smooth, velvet-like skin texture.
Key Traits: Retains classic leopard gecko traits such as movable eyelids, fat-storing tails, and clawed toes suited for ground movement rather than glass climbing.
Temperament & Behavior
Gentle & Docile: Shares the same calm, slow-moving, and inquisitive disposition as standard leopard geckos.
Beginner-Friendly Handling: Tolerates regular, gentle handling well, making it a showstopper display reptile that is also easy to interact with.
Crepuscular Activity: Most active during dawn and dusk, spending the daytime resting in warm hideouts.
Diet & Care Highlights
Diet: Strictly insectivorous—thrives on gut-loaded live insects (crickets, mealworms, dubia roaches) dusted with essential calcium and vitamin supplements.
Enclosure Needs: Simple terrestrial setup with a thermal gradient (warm side around 90°F / 32°C), moderate humidity, and multiple hides.
Lifespan: A hardy, long-lived lizard with a lifespan of 15 to 20+ years under proper care.

Morph, genetics & appearance

Morph: Black night leopard gecko

Color: hyper-melanistic dark velvet grey to jet-black coloration on its back and sides, fading into a contrasting white-to-light-grey patterned belly and lower jawline.

Feeding & behavior

Feeding: Strictly Insectivorous: Thrives solely on live, gut-loaded feeder insects—never consumes fruits, greens, or plant matter. Primary Diet: Dubia roaches, mealworms, crickets, and occasional waxworms or silkworms as high-fat treats. Juvenile Schedule: Needs daily feedings of 4 to 6 small, appropriately sized insects (no larger than the space between their eyes). Supplementation: Must dust feeders with calcium (with D3) 2 to 3 times per week and a multivitamin once per week to prevent Metabolic Bone Disease. Hydration: Requires a small, shallow water dish kept fresh daily and light misting on hide walls to aid shedding.

Behavior: Crepuscular: Active primarily during twilight hours (dawn and dusk); spends peak daytime resting in dark hides. Docile & Calm: Exceptionally easy to handle, displaying slow, deliberate movements rather than rapid darting. Inquisitive: Highly alert and curious about its surroundings when active, frequently tongue-flicking to sample scent cues in its environment. Low-Stress Expression: Lacks territorial aggression toward humans, making it a reliable, calm display and handling animal.
